While creating individual areas, I constantly kept in mind that my goal was to give each pathway three exits and entrances at all times, increasing both the flow through the level and the ability of the player to make tactical choices.  By doing this, even indoor areas that were sectioned off from the rest of the outdoor level lay in relatively vulnerable positions.
