Late in the project, I felt that the level lacked any unique gameplay that would set this level apart from others.  I decided to delve into Unrealscript to develop a new pickup - a 'Drink Me' bottle - to randomly change the player's size, from small, normal, and large.

The new gameplay feature automatically balanced itself out in many ways.  Smaller players moved slower but were harder to hit, while larger players could speed through the level but stood as a large target.  After tweaking player speeds and sizes to balance them more evently, I began placing the 'Drink Me' potions throughout the level, always in places where regardless of the player's size there was an easy escape route.
